Apple is preparing to launch a new Siri app with iOS 27, introducing a standalone digital assistant that supports both voice and text interactions. This update will allow users to revisit past conversations and interact with multiple AI assistants, including third-party chatbots. The enhanced Siri app will be available across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, delivering a more versatile and integrated AI experience within Apple’s ecosystem.

The Siri app will include an “Extensions” feature, enabling developers to connect their AI agents directly to Apple’s assistant. This enables third-party chatbot integrations through a dedicated section in the App Store serving as a marketplace for these AI extensions. Internal iOS 27 builds reveal these new capabilities, underscoring Apple’s goal to expand Siri’s functionality beyond its traditional limits.

Alongside new features, Siri will sport a refreshed design, potentially incorporating Apple’s Dynamic Island interface for a more seamless user experience. Systemwide “Ask Siri” buttons will appear in Apple apps, and a “Write with Siri” option will be added above the keyboard, facilitating easier voice and text interactions. While it’s unclear if the new Siri app requires newer devices like the iPhone 15 Pro, it will be included with the iOS 27 update once released.

Apple usually announces major iOS versions at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, with public releases launching in September. The first iOS 27 developer beta, featuring the new Siri app and extension system, is expected at WWDC. This update represents a significant evolution for Siri, transforming it from a basic voice assistant into a multi-modal AI platform competitive with third-party offerings such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, which Apple has supported via integrations since iOS 18.2.

This move toward AI extensions aligns with industry trends where voice assistants become platforms supporting customizable AI integrations. Apple’s approach-combining voice and text modes, conversation history, and third-party compatibility-draws on lessons from competitors and the success of conversational AI apps. This expansion aims to revitalize Siri, which has faced criticism for lagging behind rivals in AI functionality.
