Microsoft is overhauling Windows Search to do a simpler job better: help users find what is already on their PC. The redesign, announced as a gradual rollout on Jul 15, 2026, puts local files, apps, folders, and settings ahead of web content, while trimming back promotional elements that had made Search feel crowded.

According to Microsoft, the update also improves search accuracy, handles misspelled queries better, and adds richer previews for local files. Result categories are being made clearer as part of the broader cleanup.

Windows Search settings and local ranking changes

Microsoft says its redesigned ranking system now favors local results over Bing-powered web results. Users also get new controls to disable web and Microsoft Store results by going to Settings > Privacy & Security > Search and toggling off the unwanted option.

The company says it has also improved the underlying search logic through better query matching, clearer classification of results, and more detailed file information. Individually, those are small changes. Together, they are meant to make Search faster and less dependent on web results.

Microsoft is also stripping out features such as trending searches, quizzes, games, and recommendation cards that had added noise to the interface.

The cleaner layout signals a wider effort to simplify Windows after years of complaints that Search had become bloated and unreliable. The article ties that shift to Microsoft’s broader push toward the promised K2.

For everyday users, that should mean quicker access to apps, files, and settings with fewer distractions. For enterprises, a more predictable Search experience could reduce friction for employees who rely on Windows Search to locate documents, applications, and system tools.

The rollout is happening through Microsoft’s Controlled Feature Rollout system, so testers will get the changes gradually rather than all at once. Microsoft also recommends rebooting a device to check whether the new experience is available. Separately, the company now recommends installing Windows 11 security updates within three days, warning that attackers are using AI to exploit new vulnerabilities faster.
