NGTU patents regulator to shield motors from grid swings

Novosibirsk State Technical University patented an AC voltage regulator for three-phase networks to protect motors and production equipment from surges and dips.

Novosibirsk State Technical University researchers have patented a new AC voltage regulator for three-phase networks aimed at protecting electric motors, machine tools, and production lines from power surges and voltage dips that can shut down equipment and trigger repairs.

According to the developers, the circuit is significantly simpler than conventional designs. It uses fewer semiconductor elements and reactive components, which makes the unit more compact and easier to control.

The regulator includes a switching block with a set of modules and a reactive-element unit. Inside are non-polar capacitors and inductors, which smooth current fluctuations and keep voltage at the required level for the connected load.

NGTU engineers also built a universal control system. Its algorithms can be used not only in this regulator, but also in other power devices where voltage asymmetry must be compensated for and stable operation maintained under load.
