Ural plant patents turbine pin that won’t jam in repairs
The Ural Turbine Works has tested a new centering pin for steam turbine repairs that aims to prevent jamming and damage during disassembly.

The Ural Turbine Works has patented a guiding centering device for steam turbine repairs designed to solve a stubborn maintenance problem: guide pins that scuff, seize, and get stuck in the housing. The company has already tested the design on a real machine, making this a practical repair component rather than a lab-only concept.
For heavy power equipment, that matters. Extra steps during disassembly or reassembly can quickly add downtime and cost, especially when damaged parts complicate routine service.
The issue is familiar in large mechanical assemblies. Guide pins are supposed to align the two halves of a casing precisely, but over time they can begin to bind in their mounting holes. Once that happens, a normal teardown can turn into a lengthy job involving damaged components. If earlier repairs have altered the geometry of the holes, the standard part often has to be remade.
The UTZ design changes the mechanism. A split bushing made of spring steel sits on the pin’s conical section. During installation, the part enters with a small clearance; after the nut is tightened, the bushing expands and fixes the casing halves along the axis. During disassembly, the assembly releases, allowing the pin to be removed without the usual damage.
UTZ has already installed the development on a Tp-124-12,8-NG steam turbine. The next question is how quickly the part moves into other repair programs at the plant and among customers.
