Microsoft will stop supporting OneDrive synchronization on Windows 10 versions earlier than 22H2 on August 15. After that, users on older builds will no longer get sync app updates, bug fixes, or security patches.
The service will not shut off immediately, but Microsoft says “future functionality is not guaranteed.” Windows 10 22H2, the final version of Windows 10, will keep receiving OneDrive sync updates until October 10, 2028.
Microsoft said the move “aligns OneDrive support with the Windows lifecycle policy and helps Microsoft focus ongoing investments on supported operating systems.” The change also affects Microsoft 365 file synchronization services on older Windows 10 builds.
For affected users, the options are straightforward:

That web fallback is less convenient than native syncing. TNW notes that alternatives such as Nextcloud still support Windows 10 version 1809 and also run on Linux.
The report frames the change as part of Microsoft’s broader push through 2026 to tighten support across the Windows ecosystem, while CEO Satya Nadella’s restructuring has focused the company more heavily on AI-first products and away from maintaining older configurations.
