A new data point from Circana underscores how weak the US market for physical PlayStation games has become just as Sony faces pressure to abandon its plan to stop producing game discs starting in January 2028.
According to Mat Piscatella, Circana senior director and video game industry advisor, only seven PlayStation games have sold more than 100,000 physical units year-to-date in the US. He also said that just two PlayStation games sold more than 10,000 physical units in the US during the week ending July 11, 2026.
Piscatella later clarified that the figures cover all PlayStation games, all publishers, and all PlayStation platforms—not just Sony’s first-party releases.
The numbers surfaced as PlayStation fans continue to protest Sony’s disc phaseout. TechRadar says the latest Marvel’s Wolverine trailer has drawn more than 12,600 comments, most of them focused on the decision.
“Two PlayStation video games sold more than 10,000 physical units in the US during the week ending July 11, 2026. Seven have sold more than 100,000 physical units year-to-date.”
Which titles make up those seven is still unclear. But global estimates cited from Alinea Analytics, via GamesRadar, suggest EA Sports FC 26, Resident Evil Requiem, and 007 First Light could be among them. For Resident Evil Requiem, the estimate is that 27.8% of its 3.5 million copies sold came from physical discs.

Analysts quoted by TechRadar do not expect Sony to change course. Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, said Sony likely anticipated the backlash and believes the economics still favor digital distribution.
“They of course knew what the online reaction would look like, and they now wait for this storm to pass.” “Sony has over 120 million active PlayStation users. Around 50 million people subscribe to PlayStation Plus. As a thought experiment, let’s say 500,000 cancel in protest, that would be just 1% of that business gone — of course not enough to Sony to start rethinking. Digital is just too lucrative.”
Toto added that Sony’s profit margins have been weak for years, making digital sales especially attractive for a platform holder.
