Strange RTX 4080 Melt Appears Near RGB Lighting

A GeForce RTX 4080 reportedly developed melted plastic near its RGB module, not the power connector. The owner says the card still works and the lighting remains functional.

A GeForce RTX 4080 is drawing attention online for an unusual failure: the apparent melting is not around the power delivery area, but on part of the heat-spreader plate next to the RGB lighting module.

According to ITzine, the owner discovered the damage while cleaning the PC. Photos show the affected spot is localized around the decorative lighting area. The exact model was not identified, but based on the design, the card appears similar to an OEM version used by HP in prebuilt systems. The source says it could be a GeForce RTX 4080 or RTX 4070.

That makes the case stand out. With Nvidia’s mass-market cards, overheating discussions usually center on power connectors, especially after the well-known 12VHPWR incidents. Here, the pattern looks different.

The owner also said the case fans were not working, which could have raised temperatures inside the system. Even so, the visible melting appeared where the LED lighting sits, and that module typically draws little power and would not normally be expected to cause this kind of damage.
