Teachable AI flips coding lessons into teaching practice

Researchers unveiled Teachable AI, a prototype that has students teach coding concepts to an AI bot instead of asking it for answers.

A new prototype called Teachable AI aims to make software development education less about getting answers from generative AI and more about explaining ideas back to it. The system was introduced in a paper by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, American Heritage Schools, and the University of Rome, presented at the 14th International Conference on Information and Education Technology and published in IEEE Xplore.

The premise is simple: students learn by teaching. Instead of using tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot as direct tutors, students explain newly learned coding concepts to an AI agent. When the bot gets something wrong, students correct it, pushing them to reflect on what they actually understand.

“The widespread availability of GenAI has introduced new opportunities for learning in computing education, particularly in courses on software development, where students often struggle to grasp abstract and fundamental principles and concepts. Using our system, students act as teachers by explaining coding concepts to the Teachable AI bot and deepen their understanding of the subjects.”

The paper was coauthored by Shihong Huang and three other researchers at Carnegie Mellon. According to the authors, the prototype is built around metacognitive reflection: by articulating explanations and fixing the agent’s misunderstandings, students can strengthen their grasp of core material.
