UK to legalize plug-in solar panels on August 27

Starting August 27, people in the UK will be able to legally buy approved plug-in solar kits with a microinverter and connect them directly to a household socket. The government has quietly published amendments to existing rules after previously promising earlier this year to legalize the setup.

That means homeowners will no longer need to install a full rooftop system just to get started with solar. The change applies only to approved kits: the panels come with a microinverter and connect to a home electrical system much like a standard appliance.

This is not a brand-new market model. In Germany, similar systems have long been sold as ordinary consumer products, and the UK appears to be aligning its rules with that approach — offering a lower-cost entry point to solar without requiring installers.

Earlier this month, London published interim requirements for home plug-in solar systems. The maximum DC limit for panels is 2000 W, though the source notes that this is more of an upper ceiling than a practical target for most buyers. Based on the published document, real retail systems will likely be notably smaller.

The guidance points to roughly 960 W of output, while microinverters must not deliver more than 800 volt-amperes. For manufacturers, that creates a short window through the end of summer: if certified kits reach retail by August 27, they can still catch the season when British households may save on solar power. After that, the market will depend less on government promises and more on pricing, retail availability, and how quickly store chains start carrying the kits.
