Asus is now planning to sell a standalone version of its upcoming OLED Xbox Ally X20 handheld, reversing an earlier approach that would have required buyers to get it bundled with Xreal AR glasses, according to The Verge.
An Asus spokesperson confirmed the shift to the publication:
“We are actively discussing the release schedule for a standalone version of the new Ally. Please stay tuned for upcoming announcements.”
The Verge’s Sean Hollister, who spent two hours testing the device at Asus’s California offices, wrote that the OLED Ally could be a serious rival to the recently released MSI Claw 8 EX AI Plus. He also pointed to several hardware changes over last year’s Xbox Ally X.
Notable upgrades include:
- Rubberized grips
- Quieter face buttons
- A reworked cooling system
- A rotating D-pad that switches between eight-way and four-way layouts
Hollister said that last feature made a visible difference in games such as Hollow Knight: Silksong.

There is still no confirmed price or release date for the standalone OLED Ally. But based on Hollister’s report, it will likely cost more than the current $1,000 Xbox Ally X. The bundle that includes the ROG Xreal R1 Gaming Glasses could reach $2,000, though Asus has not confirmed pricing or launch timing for that package either.
