Samsung has launched the Samsung 990 SSD in India, targeting buyers who want high-end PCIe 4.0 speeds without paying for the Pro branding. The drive comes in 1TB and 2TB versions, with the larger model rated for sequential reads of up to 7,250 MB/s.
That puts it into direct competition with drives such as the WD Black SN850X, Crucial T500, and Kingston KC3000 as Samsung pushes for a spot in the market for fast but not top-priced NVMe storage.
The SSD uses the M.2 2280 form factor and connects over PCIe 4.0 x4 with NVMe 2.0. Inside are Samsung V-NAND memory and the company’s own controller. Samsung is emphasizing three things here: speed, power efficiency, and built-in data protection.
Key specs include:

- Capacities: 1TB and 2TB
- Sequential read: up to 7,150 MB/s on the 1TB model, up to 7,250 MB/s on the 2TB model
- Sequential write: up to 6,450 MB/s on both versions
- Random performance: 700,000 / 1.1 million IOPS read/write on 1TB; 850,000 / 1.2 million IOPS read/write on 2TB
- Endurance: 400 TBW and 800 TBW
- Encryption: AES 256-bit, TCG/Opal V2.0, IEEE1667
Samsung says the SSD is suited to gaming, content work, and general desktop use. By the company’s estimate, the 2TB version can hold roughly 30 AAA games at an average file size of 64GB each.
Another selling point is efficiency. Samsung says the new drive can be up to 38% more power-efficient than the Samsung 990 Pro while delivering comparable storage performance. Out of the box, it also supports Samsung Magician for data migration, drive health monitoring, optimization, and firmware updates.
In India, the 1TB model is priced at 25,649 rupees, while the 2TB version costs 50,349 rupees. Sales begin in the last week of July 2026, and Samsung is offering a three-year warranty.
At those prices, the 990 SSD lands in one of the most crowded parts of the SSD market, where buyers tend to weigh not just peak speeds but endurance, brand reputation, and real-world performance.
