Claude just shopped FreshDirect using 1Password

PCWorld tested Claude’s new 1Password connector by having it place a FreshDirect order on a Mac, without exposing stored passwords.

Anthropic’s Claude can now sign into websites through a new 1Password connector, and PCWorld’s Ben Patterson put it to work on a weekly FreshDirect grocery order. In his test, Claude handled the browsing and cart-building while 1Password supplied login credentials through a separate channel, so the chatbot never saw the actual password.

The integration was announced today. According to PCWorld, it currently works through the Claude Desktop app for Mac and requires both the Claude and 1Password Chrome extensions. There are also two notable limits: it does not support social logins such as “Sign in with Google,” and passkeys are not supported yet, according to 1Password.

To try it, Patterson opened Customize > Connectors in Claude Desktop, added the 1Password connector, and authorized it. A new Agentic Mode is designed to keep Claude away from the 1Password browser extension itself, while 1Password handles credentials in a separate flow.

Once Claude reached FreshDirect’s login page, it requested permission to use Patterson’s saved credentials. A six-digit authorization code then arrived, which he entered into a separate modal Claude could not see. After that, Claude was signed in to the FreshDirect account tied to a Saturday 7–9 AM delivery slot.

From there, the shopping itself was straightforward. Claude went to the reorder section, suggested 10 items including milk, scallions, strawberries, cucumbers, and shrimp, then added approved items to the cart. Patterson then gave Claude a barbecue chicken recipe, asked for side ideas such as potato salad and corn bread, and discussed which ingredients were already on hand.

A few minutes later, Claude had added items including chicken leg quarters, gold potatoes, green cabbage, carrots, celery, red onion, and bread & butter pickle chips, bringing the total to $109.60 for the same Saturday 7–9 AM delivery window. Patterson said he also asked Claude to add a tip, and a receipt arrived by email shortly after.

PCWorld frames the test less as a grocery story than as a glimpse of what secure website automation could look like for routine online chores. Patterson draws a clear line, though: he says he would not let Claude pay credit card bills or access a checking account, but he would happily let Claude and 1Password handle FreshDirect.
