Light Flip cuts apps from a modern flip phone

Light has unveiled the Light Flip, a foldable phone that borrows the look of old-school clamshells but follows the stripped-down philosophy of the Light Phone III. There’s no touchscreen and none of the familiar attention-grabbing apps. Instead, users get a T9 keypad, a small set of utilities, and a device built around the idea of avoiding the endless feed.

This is less a rival to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or Motorola Razr than a hybrid of the Light Phone III and a classic flip phone. The interface uses white text on a black background, navigated with physical controls rather than touch. According to Joe Hollier and Kaiwei Tang, many potential buyers have been asking for exactly this kind of device, particularly younger users and people in distraction-free living communities.

The bigger design choice is what Light left out. The Light Flip does not try to masquerade as a smart flip phone with an outer screen and a full suite of mobile services. In a market where even budget phones quickly pull users into social apps, streaming, and navigation, Light is narrowing the experience to calls, messages, and a handful of tools.

The company is also promoting a future Light SDK, which will let third-party developers build and distribute additional tools. Light says the first of those features should start rolling out in the fall, and that tools written for the Light Phone III can be adapted for the Light Flip’s keypad and navigation system.

Preorders are already open, but delivery is a long way off: shipments are scheduled for April 2027. Pricing is tied to Light’s service plans:

• The package includes unlimited calls and SMS plus 1GB of data per month
• An unlimited plan for active 5G use and hotspot costs $69 per month
• The Light Phone III will also be offered with a contract for $59 per month

Light launched the Light Phone III last year, and the Light Flip pushes that minimalist approach further for buyers who want a cleaner break from smartphone habits.
