Netflix adds ASL to 73 kids' shows and movies
Netflix is bringing American Sign Language interpretations to 73 family titles through SignUp Media’s Chrome extension.

Netflix is adding American Sign Language (ASL) interpretations to hundreds of hours of family programming across 73 titles, according to IndieWire. The rollout covers both shows and movies, including Netflix originals and licensed content.
Among the featured series are Stranger Things: Tales From '85, Pokémon Horizons, Octonauts and The Magic School Bus Rides Again. The movie lineup includes Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The effort comes through a partnership with SignUp Media, a company that provides online sign language interpretation. Its system works through a Google Chrome extension: viewers install the plug-in, and an interpreter appears in a separate window while the video plays.
That sets Netflix’s approach apart from most other streaming services, which typically offer separate ASL-specific versions of individual titles inside their apps instead of using a browser-based overlay.
The move also speaks to a broader accessibility gap for younger viewers. Research has suggested that captions, while helpful for adults, are often not enough for children. One study found that hearing-impaired children scored lower than expected on literacy tests compared with other children of a similar age.
