Samsung pushes laptop OLEDs to 1,600 nits

Samsung says its new tandem OLED laptop panels can hit 1,600 nits peak brightness and are headed to Lenovo, Asus, MSI, and Dell.

Samsung says its latest tandem OLED laptop panels can reach 1,600 nits of peak brightness in small windows, a notable jump for notebook displays and one tied to the new DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification.

According to TweakTown, the new panels are coming to laptops from Lenovo, Asus, MSI, and Dell. Samsung says the move to the 1,400-nit certification level requires 40% higher brightness than older single-layer OLED panels.

That gain comes from tandem OLED technology, which stacks one or more OLED layers to increase both brightness and efficiency. Samsung says it has already begun full-scale supply of the panels, starting with the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition, with Asus, MSI, and Dell machines to follow.

For users, the biggest effect should be in bright scenes during games and movies, where OLED panels have sometimes been held back by auto brightness limiting (ABL). The higher brightness headroom from tandem OLED could reduce those compromises, especially on premium laptops such as the Yoga Pro 9i Aura, which can also be configured with Nvidia RTX 5000 series laptop GPUs.

Samsung has not announced any plans to bring these new panels to standalone OLED monitors yet. For now, the company is focusing on laptops, while higher-brightness OLED gaming monitors such as the LG UltraGear OLED 27GX700A are already available.
