After two years of complaints about Sonos software, the company says a major app update is finally on the way. In a post on Reddit, Sonos called it “a big one” and outlined a set of changes aimed at making the app easier to use after the widely criticized 2024 redesign.

That earlier update drew backlash for bugs that broke home sound systems, a disliked interface, and the removal of some features. This new release focuses on usability fixes, starting with updated tab navigation. Sonos says Home, System, and Search will be easier to find, with clearer indicators showing what is selected. Users will need to turn the feature on manually by enabling “Improved Navigation” in the app’s settings.

Sonos is also adding more flexible speaker sorting. Users will be able to arrange speakers:

  • alphabetically
  • by most frequently used
  • by what’s actively playing
  • or pin speakers to the top

On iOS, the update also brings a redesigned volume interface. The new slider is dynamic, expanding or shrinking depending on the volume level, and adds numeric indicators for more precise control.

Sonos says the update is rolling out in phases and should reach everyone within the next two weeks. Anyone with automatic updates enabled will not need to manually install it.
