Nintendo is reportedly discussing an OLED version of the Switch 2, with production unlikely to begin before the end of 2027 at the earliest, according to Eurogamer, which cited a report from ZDNET Korea. If that timeline holds, the upgraded handheld could arrive around 2028.
Many observers expected Nintendo to eventually repeat the same strategy it used with the original Switch by releasing an OLED model later. What stands out here is the timing: Eurogamer said the discussions appear to be happening earlier than expected, even if mass production is still years away.
The report says Samsung Display could again supply the panel, as it did for the first Switch OLED. But pricing remains uncertain. Eurogamer noted that cost was reportedly the main reason the Switch 2 launched with an LCD instead of OLED, despite OLED being a better fit for the console’s HDR capabilities.

One source cited by ZDNET Korea said Nintendo is considering a 1920x1080 display for the OLED model. That would be an upgrade over the 1280x720 screen used in the original Switch OLED, and it would match the Switch 2's native 1080p handheld resolution. The same source said formal product development could begin by the end of this year if the plan moves ahead, though that would still come before actual production.
An OLED model could also address criticism of the current Switch 2 LCD panel, including complaints about ghosting, input lag, and inconsistent HDR performance. Eurogamer said those issues have been documented by outlets including Digital Foundry and by users on YouTube and Reddit.
A higher price looks likely. The original Nintendo Switch OLED launched at $50 more than the standard model, and Nintendo is already set to raise Switch 2 prices later this year.
Separately, Eurogamer said Nintendo has confirmed smaller Switch 2 hardware revisions in Europe this summer to meet right-to-repair requirements and updated battery regulations.
