Xiaomi has introduced its first portable battery built to China’s new national safety standard for power banks, and the company is making safety the headline feature. The new Xiaomi Power Bank 20000 22.5W goes on sale in China on July 22 for 149 yuan — about $22.

The power bank has a 20,000mAh capacity and supports 22.5W charging through a built-in cable. Instead of using one large cell, Xiaomi says it uses two 10,000mAh batteries internally.

According to Xiaomi, the device passed a series of safety tests, including:

  • a 4mm needle penetration test
  • exposure to 135°C heat
  • an overcharge test at 1.3 times normal voltage
  • a compression test with force of about 1.3 tons
  • an aging test lasting 300 cycles

The company says the battery does not catch fire even when punctured or heated to 135°C.
