Galaxy Watch 9 brings small gains for $30 more

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 9 looks a lot like the Galaxy Watch 8—because in most ways, it is. The new model keeps the same case, display sizes, durability ratings and sensor suite, while adding a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear Elite chip, slightly larger batteries and Wear OS 7 with One UI Watch 9. It also launches $30 higher than last year’s model.

The design is unchanged. The 40mm Galaxy Watch 9 measures 42.7 x 40.4 x 8.6mm, while the 44mm version is 46.0 x 43.7 x 8.6mm—identical to the Watch 8. Weight is up only slightly, from 30.0g to 31.5g on the 40mm model and 33.7g to 34.0g on the 44mm. Samsung is again using a Super AMOLED panel with up to 3000 nits of peak brightness, with a 1.34-inch screen on the 40mm watch and 1.47-inch on the 44mm. Both models keep IP68 and 5ATM protection.

What changed in Galaxy Watch 9

The biggest hardware change is the move from Samsung’s Exynos silicon to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite, a 3nm chip announced earlier this year. RAM and storage stay the same at 2GB and 32GB. The watch also keeps Google Gemini support for voice queries such as directions, reminders and text replies.

Battery capacity is higher, though the gains are uneven. The 40mm model jumps from 325mAh to 390mAh, while the 44mm version goes from 435mAh to 449mAh. Samsung says users can expect around 30 hours per charge with the Always-On Display enabled. Charging speeds are effectively unchanged: the 40mm reaches 100 percent in about 80 minutes, with 50 percent in 30 minutes; the 44mm takes about 90 minutes for a full charge and reaches 45 percent in 30 minutes.

Sensor hardware is also unchanged. The Galaxy Watch 9 includes the same Samsung BioActive Sensor, plus a temperature sensor, accelerometer, barometer, gyro sensor, geomagnetic sensor and light sensor. That means the headline health features are the same too, including blood pressure measurement, sleep apnea detection and bedtime guidance.

Price and availability

Samsung will sell the Galaxy Watch 9 for $380 in the Bluetooth version and $430 in the LTE version. The Watch 8 started at $349 and $399, respectively. In the US, pre-orders are open now, with general availability set for August 7.

Color options are slightly different this year: the 40mm model comes in Cream and Graphite, while the 44mm version comes in Graphite and Silver.

For buyers deciding between the two, the Watch 9's case rests almost entirely on the new chip and updated software. If price matters more, the older model may remain the better deal—the Galaxy Watch 8 40mm has already dropped as low as $220 on Amazon.
