iPhone 18 Pro Max leak points to variable aperture

A supplier leak suggests Apple may add a variable-aperture main camera to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, alongside a new Sony IMX905 sensor.

A leak tied to one of Apple’s suppliers appears to have revealed an early look at the iPhone 18 Pro Max camera system. The key detail is a new Sony IMX905 main sensor and a hint that Apple may finally add a variable aperture to the iPhone’s primary camera.

If the diagnostic log is genuine, Apple is changing the main camera module rather than overhauling the entire rear camera array. According to the leak, the IMX905 keeps a 1.22 μm pixel size. The bigger shift would be physical aperture control, which could give Apple more flexibility over depth of field and exposure instead of relying so heavily on software processing.

The rest of the camera hardware appears to be largely unchanged. The log reportedly lists a Sony IMX973 telephoto, Sony IMX972 ultrawide, LiDAR, and a front-facing camera. That makes the iPhone 18 Pro Max look less like a ground-up camera redesign and more like a careful update to a familiar setup.

The report traces back not to Apple itself, but to an incident involving Tata Electronics, one of Apple’s manufacturing partners in India. Reports said hundreds of gigabytes of data were leaked online, including information on components and testing. Apple has not commented publicly.

Variable aperture in smartphones is not new. Samsung used it in the Galaxy S9 and S10 before dropping the feature, likely because of mechanical complexity, module thickness, and cost. Huawei also experimented with mechanical light control in the Mate series, but the technology never became mainstream.

That is what makes this rumor notable. Apple has long prioritized sensor performance, computational photography, and image processing over moving optics. A switch to the IMX905 would fit that strategy if the company is now preparing to bring variable aperture to its 2026 flagship.

There are also claims that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could cost about $200 more because of rising component costs. If Apple sticks to its usual schedule, those rumors should be tested in September 2026.
