MIT turns a 1985 zipper patent into a rigid 3D beam

MIT CSAIL revived Bill Freeman’s 1985 three-sided zipper idea, turning it into a 3D-printed fastener that switches from flexible to load-bearing.

A 40-year-old patent that sat in a garage is now a working prototype at MIT CSAIL. The project, called Y-Zipper, traces back to 1985, when Bill Freeman, then an electrical engineer at Polaroid, proposed a three-sided zipper designed to transform soft structures into rigid, load-bearing ones.

Freeman’s idea was rejected in a design competition, but he patented it and kept the prototype in his garage for nearly four decades. Freeman is now an MIT professor, and researchers at the university’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory have finally built it into a practical system. According to the source, lead researcher Jiaji Li and the CSAIL team not only recreated the concept but also developed an automated design workflow around it.

The mechanism joins three flexible strips into a triangular rod when zipped, creating a rigid beam. Unzip it, and the structure returns to a soft, pliable state. CSAIL’s software lets users customize the design before 3D printing, including:

  • strip length
  • bend angle
  • one of four motion configurations: straight, arch-like bent, spring-like coiled, or screw-like twisted

The team has already demonstrated the approach in camping gear, medical equipment, robotic limbs, and art installations, and the source says CSAIL is also considering uses such as spacecraft tentacles for collecting rock samples and rapidly deployable medical tents for disaster relief.

For now, Y-Zipper is limited to plastic filaments. The team says metal versions could improve strength and durability, and scaling to larger structures remains future work.
