MSI Cyborg 15 gets the basics right for work and play

MSI’s Cyborg 15 pairs an Intel Core 7 240H and RTX 5060 with solid all-around performance, but its display and thermals fall short.

The MSI Cyborg 15 doesn’t try to be the most powerful gaming laptop in its class. Instead, it aims for balance: enough performance for modern games at high settings, enough headroom for creative work, and a slimmer build than many gaming notebooks.

That trade-off mostly works. According to ZDNET’s testing, the laptop is easy to recommend as a midrange gaming PC that can also handle school or office tasks, image editing, and even some 4K video editing. Its weaker points are the display and heat management.

Design and display

MSI gives the Cyborg 15 a “cyberpunk-inspired” look rather than the usual all-black gaming-laptop shell. The machine is still mostly black and gray, but it adds some character through details like a textured palm rest that MSI says has anti-scratch properties. ZDNET notes that some design touches, including the curved rear exhaust vents and the line’s “C” and “Y” heart-shaped logo, feel more cosmetic than functional.

At 4.37 pounds, the laptop is relatively light for the category, and ZDNET says the weight distribution makes it feel even lighter. It also passes the one-finger test when opening the lid. The downside is a small trackpad, though it supports multitouch gestures such as two-finger scrolling.

The audio is a highlight. The Cyborg 15 uses two 2W speakers with DTS Audio Processing, which ZDNET says deliver clear sound, strong bass, and plenty of volume.

The screen is less convincing. It’s a 15.6-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) panel with a 144Hz refresh rate, which helps games feel smooth, but the overall image quality is described as unremarkable. Color reproduction is said to be accurate enough and it supports the entire RGB color space, but the display lacks standout visual enhancements and can look dull next to competing gaming laptops.

Performance, heat, and price

ZDNET’s review unit paired an Intel Core 7 240H, Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060, and 16GB of RAM. In daily use, that setup handled dozens of Chrome tabs alongside Discord, Spotify, VLC Media Player, and Microsoft Office without slowing down. It also performed well in Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro, including editing 4K drone footage.

Gaming performance was similarly solid across:

  • Civilization VI
  • Monster Hunter Wilds
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
  • Call of Duty
  • Remnant 2

ZDNET says the system stayed responsive during long sessions and did not throttle under load, even when temperatures climbed.

That said, thermals are the laptop’s biggest hardware issue. MSI’s Cooler Boost cooling system was less effective here than on some other models, with Civilization VI in particular causing loud fans and a warm chassis that made the keyboard uncomfortable to use. Other tested games did not trigger the same level of heat.

Battery life was better than average for a gaming laptop, lasting about six hours on a charge after optimizing the hardware for efficiency over power.

If you want the exact review configuration, ZDNET says an MSI representative expects it to launch in mid-August. For buyers who don’t want to wait, Newegg is selling a nearly identical Cyborg 15 for $1,199. The main difference is 512GB of storage instead of 1TB.

ZDNET’s bottom line: the MSI Cyborg 15 is a strong pick for shoppers who want a midrange gaming laptop that can also pull everyday productivity duty without major compromises.
