Match Group’s OkCupid has resolved a long-standing Federal Trade Commission lawsuit that accused the dating app of improperly sharing user data in 2014. The FTC alleged that OkCupid disclosed personal information-including around three million user photos and location data-to Clarifai, an external AI company specializing in facial recognition and content moderation, without user consent or notification.

The controversy stems from OkCupid’s privacy policy at the time, which stated that personal information would only be shared with “service providers, business partners, other entities within its family of businesses.” The FTC argued that Clarifai was not authorized under these terms, making the data sharing unauthorized and misleading.

OkCupid denied any wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement without a monetary penalty. In a statement, the company highlighted improvements in its privacy and data handling policies since the incident, emphasizing that current practices align more closely with user expectations.

FTC settlement terms and data privacy improvements

The FTC settlement imposes permanent restrictions on Match Group and Humor Rainbow-OkCupid’s operator-to prevent any further misrepresentations about the collection, use, and sharing of personal information. This aims to ensure transparency and respect for consumer data choices.

Additional privacy scrutiny and security updates

Although the 2014 data-sharing issue was a focal point, OkCupid faced additional privacy scrutiny after security vulnerabilities were uncovered in 2020. Those were quickly fixed, illustrating ongoing challenges dating apps face in safeguarding sensitive user data against breaches and misuse.

Challenges for dating apps amid rising AI and privacy concerns

This case underscores the regulatory pressure dating platforms confront when navigating user privacy, especially as integrations with AI tools become more common. As users demand greater control and clarity over their data, companies like OkCupid are under increasing obligation to offer explicit choices and strong protections.
