Signal has started testing a long-requested feature in its beta app: the ability to link an Android smartphone or tablet to an existing account as a second device.

Until now, using two phones with Signal typically meant relying on a separate phone number. This new setup is much simpler. On Android, users can connect a second phone or tablet to their main account, with chats and message history synced across devices.

The linking process uses a QR code, which must be scanned from the primary device. On tablets, Signal is also testing a two-panel interface, with chats on the left and conversations on the right.

The move brings Signal closer to WhatsApp, Telegram, and iMessage, where multi-device support has long been standard. Signal has not provided a launch date yet, and the feature remains limited to the beta version for now.

The change is notable because Signal has lagged behind rivals on device flexibility, even as multi-device messaging has become a baseline expectation for modern chat apps.
