Windows 11 could put your phone on the taskbar
A leaked Windows 11 update could bring tighter Android integration, including a taskbar phone panel and deeper Samsung Galaxy Book ties.

Microsoft is reportedly preparing a notable update to how Windows 11 works with Android. If a leak cited by Windows Central is accurate, owners of Galaxy Book laptops and Samsung phones may be able to control key phone functions directly from the Start menu and taskbar, without constantly opening Phone Link.
According to the report, Microsoft is testing a redesigned Phone Companion inside Start. The system would surface more of a smartphone’s activity directly in the Windows 11 interface, including device status, quick actions, and access to communication features without launching a separate app window.
One of the most practical additions could be a dedicated phone icon in the taskbar. That panel is expected to open a compact view showing the phone’s current status and commands such as Do Not Disturb, Find my phone, and a way to trigger vibration.
Microsoft is also said to be working on full clipboard history sync between a PC and Android. Right now, Phone Link can transfer only the most recently copied item, not the full sequence. The company is also reportedly building a separate Messages app so phone conversations can be pinned in the Start menu as a standalone shortcut.

For Samsung, the update would be especially significant. Microsoft has long developed Phone Link, and Samsung has been one of its closest partners since Link to Windows arrived on Galaxy flagships. As the source notes, Apple still benefits from the tight integration between iPhone and Mac, while PC makers are increasingly competing on ecosystem convenience as much as hardware.
According to StatCounter, Windows remains the dominant desktop OS, but macOS still holds a double-digit market share. These Windows 11 features are still in the prototype stage, so the final feature set could change before release. The next clues should appear in upcoming Windows 11 Insider builds, and if Microsoft ships the update in 2026, Galaxy Book may gain a stronger case against the MacBook through fewer steps in everyday tasks.
