Apple appears to be preparing Car Key support for future GWM Tank vehicles, according to code changes in the Wallet app backend discovered by MacRumors.

GWM Tank is the off-road luxury SUV brand from Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor. Apple’s Car Key feature lets drivers use an iPhone or Apple Watch with NFC to unlock a compatible vehicle through the Wallet app, with the digital key stored directly in Wallet.

On supported cars, users can unlock a vehicle by holding an iPhone or Apple Watch near the car’s NFC reader. Depending on the automaker, features can vary, but Apple says Car Key at minimum can be used to lock, unlock, and start a car, matching the core functions of a physical key.

Apple introduced Car Key in 2022. Automakers including BMW, Rivian, Kia, and Hyundai already support it, and Apple maintains a full compatibility list on its CarPlay model availability webpage.

The finding also follows another recent report from MacRumors saying code in the third developer beta of iOS 27 pointed to upcoming Car Key support for Lucid and Xiaomi vehicles, suggesting Apple is continuing to broaden the feature across more brands.
