Apple reportedly planned one last Intel Mac Pro
Bloomberg says Apple had two canceled Mac Pro projects, including an Intel model and an unreleased M3 Ultra version.

Apple’s decision to kill the Mac Pro in March apparently came after multiple abandoned attempts to keep the workstation line alive. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple had two unreleased Mac Pro models in development, codenamed J170 and J190.
The bigger surprise is J170: Gurman says it was a new Intel Corp. Mac Pro, even as Apple was already pushing ahead with its own chips. According to the report, the machine was meant to serve certain use cases that Apple silicon apparently did not fully address.
The second canceled model, J190, was an M3 Ultra Mac Pro that was expected to launch alongside the M3 Ultra Mac Studio in early 2025. That never happened. Gurman also says Apple had developed both M2 Extreme and M3 Extreme chips before winding down those projects over cost and demand concerns.

That lines up with Apple’s eventual move in March to discontinue the Mac Pro, remove it from its website, and steer customers toward the Mac Studio instead. Gurman writes that he does not expect Apple to bring back the Mac Pro anytime soon, “if ever.” Meanwhile, new Mac Studio models with M5 Ultra chips are said to be coming as early as this fall.
