Valve readies ARM SteamOS for Steam Frame

Valve and Collabora have published Holo Core, an ARM build base for SteamOS on the Steam Frame VR headset, ahead of a possible pre-summer 2026 launch.

Valve is working with Collabora on an ARM version of SteamOS for the wireless Steam Frame VR headset. The project is called Holo Core, and it is meant to support aarch64 devices using an Arch Linux base that previously had no official ARM support. Source code, containers, and prebuilt images are already available.

This is not yet a full port of Arch Linux to ARM. What exists now is a build environment for packaging software and adapting applications to the new chipset. According to the source, Valve is also pushing Steam Frame itself toward a launch earlier than the summer 2026 window the company had previously mentioned publicly, though it still has not announced an official release date or price.

Holo Core build system details

The harder part of the effort is not the headset hardware but Arch Linux. The distribution was built around x86-64, so moving it to aarch64 is not straightforward. Collabora therefore had to build much of its continuous integration infrastructure almost from scratch.

Developers said the system can:

  • calculate dependencies automatically
  • determine build order
  • preserve package update history, including intermediate versions

At launch, it already includes several thousand packages — enough to build system images and prepare a software environment for Steam Frame. Packages, builds, and a developer container are available publicly, allowing third-party teams to test software compatibility, build their own packages, and start optimizing applications for ARM before the hardware ships.

Steam Frame launch timing

Valve has taken a similar path before with Steam Deck, which also relies on the Linux ecosystem and the Proton compatibility layer. This time, though, the challenge is different: moving a desktop gaming stack to an ARM-based VR device.

Rivals have already gone in that direction. Meta has long used ARM chips and an Android base for Quest, while Apple Vision Pro runs on Apple’s own ARM processors with a tightly controlled software stack. Valve appears to be aiming for something else: keeping the familiar Steam experience without staying tied to x86.

If Holo Core eventually syncs with standard SteamOS, and if Valve contributes its work back to Arch Linux, the effort could extend beyond a single headset. For the broader ecosystem, that may matter even more than the device itself, because ARM support in Arch has remained a niche area so far.

Valve previously pointed to summer 2026 for Steam Frame, but media reports cited by the source say large batches of the device are already in warehouses — suggesting the launch window could move earlier if software and certification do not slow it down.
