Researchers at St. Petersburg State Transport University have developed self-compacting concrete for bridges that does not need vibration during placement. The material is designed for environments where standard mixes quickly lose performance, including bridges, marine structures, and industrial facilities.
According to the source, the concrete compacts under its own weight, which can speed up construction and reduce the risk of voids and defects in densely reinforced structures. The university said the mix also offers higher water resistance and better resistance to chemical exposure.
Its composition includes high-activity Portland cement, 3–10 mm granite crushed stone, and sand selected by grain size. Flowability comes from an additive based on polycarboxylate polymers, methacrylic and maleic acids, and nanoscale silicon dioxide. Additional strength is provided by blast-furnace slag, microsilica, and xanthan gum.
