iOS 26.6 quietly preps iPhones for iOS 27
Apple’s iOS 26.6 release notes say the update optimizes Spotlight indexing to prepare devices for iOS 27 later this fall.

Apple’s iOS 26.6 RC has arrived with the usual bug fixes and security updates, but the release notes include an unusual extra: Apple says the update also “optimizes the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27.”
That wording stands out because Apple rarely references a future OS release in notes for a current one. According to the company’s official description, iOS 26.6 is doing advance work so iPhones are better prepared for iOS 27.
The move lines up with what developers saw when the iOS 27 beta first shipped last month. Many reported that their iPhones spent extended periods indexing, in some cases for a week or longer. Apple now appears to be shifting much of that work earlier, before the public rollout this fall.

If your iPhone starts handling Spotlight indexing after installing iOS 26.6, that is likely intentional. The advance indexing should help support the new Siri and Spotlight changes coming in iOS 27, and could make the upgrade feel smoother when the next major release arrives.
