Apple’s iOS 27 public beta is now available after its WWDC debut in June, and ZDNET’s Prakhar Khanna says the update is less about headline features and more about fixing small, persistent frustrations. After a month on the developer beta, he points to five understated additions that have had the biggest impact on daily use.
The first is a smarter Control Center. In iOS 27, Wi-Fi and Mobile Data get one-tap access without expanding the Connectivity widget, thanks to a new half-page layout that also includes Airplane Mode, AirDrop, Bluetooth, Personal Hotspot, and VPN. Apple has also improved the interface in landscape orientation, keeping brightness and volume controls in more consistent positions.
The Photos app is also getting a practical fix. Under Collections > Utilities, iOS 27 adds a Captured by Me folder that groups only the photos and videos shot on the iPhone, separate from saved media from apps like iMessage, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Another small but useful change is expanded auto-paste suggestions above the keyboard. Beyond one-time passwords, iOS 27 can now surface copied text, addresses, and screenshots directly in the suggestion bar, cutting out the need to long-press for the paste menu.
Apple has also upgraded on-device dictation. Khanna says the new Advanced Dictation Preview better understands context, handles complex words more accurately, and removes filler words like “umm” and “ahh.” It also adds commas automatically in some cases. The feature is off by default in the beta and can be enabled in Settings > General > Keyboard. It runs on Apple’s AFM Core Advanced model and stays on-device.
Finally, iOS 27 adds separate controls for ringer, alarm, and system volumes in Settings > Sounds & Haptics. That means users can keep a low ringer volume without also lowering alarms and timers.
According to ZDNET, iOS 27 is still a modest release compared with iOS 26, but these quieter changes may matter more in everyday use. Khanna says his iPhone Air on iOS 27 already feels faster than his iPhone 17 Pro Max running iOS 26, ahead of the stable release expected in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Ultra.
