Russia’s NII Polius says it has built a pulsed pump-current source for laser diodes that protects against damaging voltage spikes.

Russia’s NII Polius has developed a pulsed pump current source for laser diodes designed to protect them from voltage spikes. The issue is especially acute in solid-state lasers, where working with an inductive load can generate surges that damage diodes and make it harder to shrink overall system size.
The institute’s approach adds a controlled voltage limiter between the zero bus and the snubber diode. Inside that limiter are a comparison circuit and a switch. When voltage at the low-voltage terminal rises above a safe threshold, the switch activates and cuts the current, preventing the shock load from reaching sensitive components.

That makes the design a practical one for laser hardware, where stable diode power directly affects both service life and operating precision. Compact protection circuits also matter in industrial, medical, and measurement equipment, where engineers have long been trying to reduce the size of protection modules without sacrificing reliability.
According to the source, the development could be useful in laser systems that need precise control of pump current along with overvoltage protection. If the solution can be integrated into mass-produced power supplies without a noticeable rise in cost, it could move from the lab into next-generation standard laser modules.
