Russia’s 12x12 swamp rover packs dual wheels

An engineer near Moscow unveiled an articulated off-road vehicle with up to 12x12 drive, dual ultra-low-pressure tires, and optional tracks.

An engineer from the Moscow region has shown an articulated all-terrain vehicle designed for swamps, weak soils, and severe off-road conditions. The machine uses a layout of up to 12×12, rides on dual wheels, and splits its structure into two linked sections so it can keep moving where conventional wheeled vehicles quickly start to bog down.

The vehicle is built from two parts. The front section handles the powertrain and steering, while the rear section carries cargo and passengers. Between them is an articulated coupling unit that lets the vehicle move across three axes at once, helping it follow uneven terrain over hummocks, ruts, and washed-out ground.

The source says the front section is built in an 8×8 configuration, while the rear section is 12×12. Its mobility comes not only from the axle count, but also from dual ultra-low-pressure pneumatic tires, which increase the contact patch and reduce ground pressure. For especially difficult terrain, the rear section’s inner wheels can also be fitted with a removable track belt.

This kind of vehicle is not unusual in Russia, but it is also not a mass-market product. The market already includes production all-terrain vehicles such as Trekol and Sherp, as well as heavier articulated platforms used in the north and in extractive industry projects. But a configuration with this many wheels and a dual-wheel layout is still relatively rare: manufacturers usually opt for fewer axles or switch to tracks to avoid extra weight and maintenance complexity.

The project targets a narrow market where top speed matters less than the ability to cross bogs, deep snow, or muddy forest roads with a load on board. If it reaches assembly and testing, it will be compared less with SUVs than with expedition vehicles used to deliver supplies to remote settlements, geologists, and rescue teams.
